- ➤ A major Hardin County factory caught fire Wednesday when firefighters reached Akebono Brake Corporation at 300 Ring Road and found smoke coming from the roof caused by a piece of equipment; two workers suffered smoke inhalation while the blaze was quickly brought under control — the plant, which will close in December after over 35 years in operation, is expected to lose about 640 jobs. - ➤ Gov. Beshear stepped up his efforts on Wednesday to guarantee preschool access for every 4-year-old by launching a campaign to improve student readiness and help ease family finances. Beshear announced Wednesday that Kentucky’s request for a 30-day extension for disaster assistance has been approved—allowing affected residents in designated counties to file claims until July 25 for damages from storms, flooding, landslides, tornadoes and mudslides that began on April 2. - ➤ Governor Andy Beshear said the state gas tax will drop by 1.4 cents to 26.4 cents per gallon starting July 1, saving families money on everyday trips, and the funds will support road maintenance.
