COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Kentucky Humane Society puppies will take part in Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl this Sunday to boost adoption rates while showing their charm. The shelter will host a free watch party at PG and J's in the Highlands at 1 p.m.—admission is $10 for dogs.  WLKY
  • Kentucky State Police has launched its Trooper Teddy Valentine’s Day Sale through Feb. 16 to fund the Trooper Teddy Project, which gives comfort to children who have experienced trauma (teddy bears cost $20 and are available online or at KSP Posts).  K105

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In December, unemployment in Kentucky decreased as all 120 counties posted lower rates than last year. The state average fell to 3.5 percent (down from 5 percent), while Hardin County improved from 5.5 percent last December to 4.1 percent and the Lincoln Trail District averaged 3.8 percent.  Quicksie 98.3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Andy Beshear and state medical cannabis advisors urged lawmakers to expand the list of qualifying conditions for cannabis cards, which could help nearly 430,000 Kentuckians, as the program grows with new cultivators and dispensaries (additional processors and dispensaries are scheduled for inspection this month).  Quicksie 98.3
  • State and contracted crews have driven over one million miles of roads to treat hazards created by the winter storm (up to nine inches of snow and ice) that affected several counties. Hardin County crews are salting 568 miles of roads as over 600 power outages and water system issues persist.  Quicksie 98.3
  • A Radcliff woman addressed state lawmakers at the capitol on Wednesday to push for broader animal protection measures that could benefit animals + taxpayers in Kentucky.  The News-Enterprise

  • Animal rights group PETA says jockey Paco Lopez, suspended last September for harsh whipping, should be banned from this year’s Derby as they ask the Louisiana Racing Commission to revoke his license and Churchill Downs to remove his points.  WLKY
